ISLAMABAD: The India-Iran Chabahar Port agreement has the potential to significantly impact regional relations in several positive ways. However, analysts and experts expressed mix views over the crucial matter affecting millions of people living in South Asia. The project can increase trade and connectivity in the region as the Chabahar port’s development aims to create a gateway to Central Asia and Afghanistan, offering a shorter and more efficient trade route compared to traditional routes. This could also boost regional trade and economic cooperation, potentially leading to greater prosperity for all involved, including neighbouring countries, according to analysts. Chahbahar Port could truly serve as a sister project of Gwadar. It can improve relations between India, Iran, and Pakistan. The successful development of the port could strengthen the strategic partnership between India, Iran, and Pakistan, particularly if Pakistan develops its road and rail network with Iran. The project can also enhance stability in Afghanistan, which is crucial for the region. Increased trade and economic activity through Chabahar could also contribute to greater stability and development in Afghanistan, as the country gains access to a new trade route and potential investment opportunities. It will raise the standard of living for Afghans, culminating in extremism and reducing terrorism in the region.
Experts said that Pakistan can utilise Chahbahar as a bargaining tool for the Pakistan-Iran Gas Pipeline. The port can also be used as an argument to counter the US stance on precluding Pakistan from getting cheap energy resources for Iran, as more countries joining the Chabahar Belt will enable Pakistan to put forward a substantial argument in favour of the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline.
However, the project has also negative impacts as there is uncertainty in ties between the US and Iran. The ongoing US sanctions against Iran could pose challenges to the full development and utilization of the Chabahar port, experts thought. Any escalation in tensions between the US and Iran could further jeopardise the project’s success, they added.
Several experts expressed concerned over the security situation in the region as piracy and terrorism pose threats in the volatile Chabahar. Ensuring the port and trade routes are secure will be critical to their success.
Many Pakistanis and experts view Chabahar as a rival to the Gwadar port project and may see India’s involvement as a challenge to their own regional ambitions. This could lead to increased tensions between the two countries. However, overall, the India-Iran Chabahar Port Agreement is a complex project with the potential for both positive and negative impacts on regional relations. Its success will depend on various factors, including the ability to address security concerns, overcome political challenges, and ensure sustainable development practices.
Many experts in Pakistan think that the benefits outweigh drawbacks; hence, Pakistan should support and be involved in the project to get maximum benefits from strengthening its economy and reducing animosities.
