DUBAI: The cargo ship Rubymar, operating in the Gulf of Aden, remains afloat despite a missile attack by Yemeni rebels. The vessel, carrying combustible fertilizer, sustained damage but is still viable for towing to Djibouti, as confirmed by its operator, the Blue Fleet Group.

The attack, claimed by Houthi rebels, caused significant damage to Rubymar, with one missile hitting the ship’s side and another striking its deck. Although water entered the engine room and the stern of the vessel sagged, the crew managed to evacuate safely to Djibouti.

Efforts are underway to tow the ship to Djibouti, with an expected arrival of the tugboat within the next two to three days. While there is no immediate risk of sinking, concerns persist due to potential fuel oil leaks from the damaged vessel.

The Rubymar incident marks the most severe damage inflicted on a commercial ship since the Houthis began targeting vessels in November. The group claims solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has prompted heightened tensions in the region.

It is imperative to address the safety of commercial shipping routes in the Gulf of Aden, particularly amid escalating conflict and increased risks to maritime trade. The international community must remain vigilant in safeguarding shipping lanes to prevent further disruptions to global commerce.

As the situation unfolds, ongoing monitoring and collaborative efforts are essential to ensure the safety and security of vessels navigating through these volatile waters.
