ISLAMABAD: Islamabad police on Saturday registered an FIR against 24 workers and leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for allegedly carrying out violent protests in the federal capital.
PTI leader Ali Ahmad Awan, Aamir Mahmood Kayani, Wasif Qayum and others were among those booked by the police.
According to the FIR registered at the I-9 Police Station, the accused were involved in confrontation with the police and damaging government infrastructure.
It said that the accused attacked security personnel with sticks and stones and as a result of which, nine FC personnel and five police personnel were wounded.
Police said that they have detained 30 accused.
The FIR comes as the PTI has called for another nationwide protest call at 5pm on Saturday (today).
On Friday, PTI workers staged protests across the country including in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. On Friday, PTI workers staged protests at Faizabad, Sangjani Peshawar Road, Toll Plaza Bhara Kahu, Rawat, GT Road and outside the National Press Club after Friday prayers and the protests continued at some places till late night.
The protest demonstrations also turned violent at some places including in Faizabad and the protestors pelted stones at the police.
Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the protestors. Police also arrested a large number of the protesters and shifted them to police stations in Islamabad.
