LONDON: Canadian poet Rupi Kaur has refused an invitation to attend a Diwali celebration at the White House, in protest against the US government’s stance on Israel’s war on occupied Gaza, Arab media reported on Tuesday.

In a message on social media, Rupi Kaur said she could not accept “invitation from those that support the collective punishment” of civilian population.

She said: “Biden’s administration is not only sponsoring the bombing of the Gaza Strip but they also continue to justify the current genocide against people of Palestine and now they want us to rejoice the festival of Diwali with them. When their back of the ongoing atrocities against people of Palestine represent the exact opposite of what this day means to so many of us.”

She urged other people from South Asia to hold the Biden administration answerable for its acts. Over 10,300 Palestinians have been killed by Israel’s airstrikes on the Gaza Strip in the last 31 days, including over 4,100 kids, the Gaza Health Ministry said. In her message, she denounced President Joe Biden for his decline to back a UN-sponsored humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip.
