Canadian PM Says Focusing on Kids After Wife Separation

OTTAWA: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that he is focusing on his children after announcing his separation from his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau two weeks ago, western media reported on Monday.

On August 2 his office said Trudeau and Sophie had signed a legal agreement to separate but did not publicly speak about the development.

However, on Monday, Trudeau said he is focusing on his children and their future. These are the first comments he has made after announcing his separation.

He refused to elaborate on any details about the separation. He thanked those who had offered him support by requesting continued privacy.

Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau were married in 2005 and have three children, 14-year-old Ella-Grace, 15-year-old Xavier, and 9-year-old Hadrien.

The PM’s office earlier said, “The couple remain a close family and Sophie and Justin Trudeau are focused on raising their children in a loving, safe, and collaborative atmosphere,”.

Prime Minister Trudeau is the 2nd Prime Minister of Canada to announce a separation while in office.

Earlier, Justin Trudeau’s father, Pierre Trudeau, also separated from his wife Margaret in 1979.
