OTTAWA: Canadian Government announced on Sunday that it will pay hundreds of local communities over $2 billion in compensation for nearly a century of abuse suffered by kids in residential schools.

A class-action lawsuit brought by more than three hundred Indigenous communities has resulted in the US$2.1 billion settlement.

The compensation will be utilized to “revive local education, culture, and language to assist survivors in healing and reconnecting with their culture and heritage.

A local leader Garry Feschuk said that it has taken too long to recognize the collective harm caused to their nation by residential schools. The local leader added that it is time to recognize the harm and assist the victims.

The government of Canada sent around 150,000 children into residential schools run by the Catholic church, where they (children) were cut off from their culture, families, and language.

Many children were physically and sexually abused, and thousands of children are believed to have died of disease.

Over 1,300 graves have been discovered, the most recent about just 10 days ago. In 2022, Pope Francis visited Canada to apologize for the abuse.
