LOS ANGELES: Canada reached the World Cup last 16 for the first time in their history after Stephen Eustaquio scored deep into stoppage time to seal a 1-0 win over South Africa on Sunday.
The opening knockout match appeared headed for extra time before Eustaquio struck in the second minute of added time. The Porto midfielder, currently on loan at Los Angeles FC, controlled the ball on his chest and fired a first-time effort into the bottom-left corner.
Canada create better chances
Canada started strongly and created the clearer openings against a South African side that defended deep for long periods.
In the 22nd minute, Eustaquio delivered a dangerous free-kick to Derek Cornelius, but the defender mistimed his header from close range.
Canada went close again late in the first half when Moise Bombito’s header was cleared off the line before Tajon Buchanan’s follow-up was saved by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Davies makes impact
Alphonso Davies, returning from a hamstring injury, was introduced in the 75th minute and quickly lifted Canada’s attack.
He created chances for Jonathan David and Promise David, but South Africa survived until the final moments.
Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4, while South Africa exit the tournament.
