ISLAMABAD: Leslie Scanlon, Canada’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, stated on Thursday that Canada has a long and proud history of supporting gender equality and women’s empowerment.

She made these remarks at the High Commission of Canada during a ceremony commemorating International Women’s Day 2023. She stated that they are thrilled to launch the Ambassador for a Day event and to provide a unique opportunity for a young woman to firsthand experience the world of diplomacy,” adding that they hope to encourage and inspire young girls and women in Pakistan to follow their passions and show them that they can make a difference through this initiative.

Women’s empowerment and Pakistani women

According to a press release issued here by the Canadian High Commission, the goal of this initiative was to give a young Pakistani woman a chance to step into the shoes of a Canadian diplomat and experience the day-to-day responsibilities of this important role.

The Ambassador for the Day provides an opportunity to meet with Canadian diplomats, interact with international donor agencies, and foreign and Pakistani officials, and take part in a variety of activities that provided her with unique insight into the workings of a diplomatic mission.

The selected woman will also attend several meetings with the High Commissioner, where she will be able to ask detailed questions and meet the changemakers who are working to bring about positive change in Pakistan.

Nida Khan, an ambitious young student from Chitral, would be joining them at the High Commission this year, according to Leslie Scanlon. Nida aspires to be a diplomat and represent Pakistan, according to her.

Nida hopes to learn more about diplomacy’s role in addressing these critical issues as a passionate advocate for women’s rights and inclusion, particularly in sports. She went on to say that they are confident Nida will bring new perspectives and ideas to the table and that they are looking forward to a productive and engaging day with her.

In keeping with the Government of Canada’s theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, “Every Woman Counts,” Nida was also given the opportunity to manage the Canadian High Commissioner’s Twitter account for the day, sharing her unique experiences with the public.

The theme serves as a reminder that all women, regardless of age or background, have a place in all aspects of society, including the economic, social, and democratic spheres.
