SEOUL:  South Korea and Canada agreed to enhance cooperation on vital supply chains and work more closely to counter the nuclear threats from North Korea after their leaders met in Seoul on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — on his first official trip to the South, and the first by a Canadian leader in about a decade – received by President Yoon Suk Yeol for an important summit on Wednesday afternoon.

After the meeting, Yoon said the pair had agreed to boost cooperation on supply chains, particularly for important minerals used in electric car batteries, which Canada has reserves of and which are required by South Korea’s vehicle manufacturers.

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional security and condemned North Korea’s banned atomic program, Yoon told a joint media briefing, following another record-making year of missiles tested by Pyongyang’s Kim Jong Un.

Canada’s Offer to South Korea

Trudeau offered South Korea support in its plans to “achieve a de-nuclearized, unified, peaceful, and prosperous Korean Peninsula, as well as increased cooperation on security, according to a statement released by both sides.
