DOUALA: A devastating road accident in Cameroon has resulted in the loss of 15 lives, including the driver of a minibus carrying mourners and their deceased loved one for burial.
The incident occurred on Friday when the minibus collided with a lorry, according to Transport Minister Jean Ernest Massena Ngalle Bibehe.
The fatal crash took place in Edea, an industrial city located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Douala, the country’s economic capital.
Alongside the 15 passengers in the minibus, the lorry’s driver also perished in the collision. Additionally, three individuals aboard the minibus sustained injuries, as reported by state radio, CRTV.
High Rate of Road Fatalities in Cameroon
Minister Ngalle Bibehe confirmed that the minibus was transporting a body for burial, but he was unable to provide further details regarding the cause of the accident.
Cameroon has been grappling with a high rate of road fatalities, with the latest available data from the World Health Organization indicating it has one of the highest proportions of road deaths in Africa.
This tragic incident follows another recent road accident in eastern Cameroon earlier this month, which claimed the lives of 15 people when a bus veered off the road.
