ISLAMABAD/Peshawar: Speakers at a seminar on Thursday called for the full implementation of the food fortification programme to combat food scarcity and nutrition deficiency.
The Pakistan Flour Mills Association and Nutrition International hosted the seminar as part of the national food fortification programme.
Alleviation of nutrient deficiency
Imtiaz Ali Shah, Provincial Programme Manager of Food Fortification Programme, said that fortifying staple foods such as oil, ghee, and flour would assist the government in addressing and alleviating nutritional deficiencies, particularly in mothers and infants.
He said that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety & Halal Food Authority (FS&HFA) is establishing a nutrition wing to promote healthy and nutritious food practices throughout the province. He praised the Nutrition International’s role in promoting health standards and combating malnutrition in women and children.
PFMA Chairman Muhammad Iqbal praised the FS&HFA and the Nutrition International for their proactive roles in the fortification programme.
He said that the use of vitamin B-12, folic acid, zinc, and iron through the wheat flour fortification programme could protect consumers from a variety of diseases, including cancer.
