ISLAMABAD:  The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday rejected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) plea to recount votes in PP-139 Sheikphura-V in Sunday’s by-election.

Abu Bakar Sharaqpuri, the PTI candidate, had approached the ECP for a recount, but he could not find a positive response from the electoral body.

PML-N candidate Chaudhry Iftikhar Bhangoo defeated him with a margin of more than 2000 votes, obtaining 36,435 ballots. Abu Bakar Sharaqpuri could only bag 34,973 votes.

It is to be noted that this seat was won by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the 2018 general elections. At that time, the then PML-N candidate Jalil Ahmad Sharaqpuri had emerged victorious, who later resigned from his party and joined PTI.
