ISLAMABAD: Bushra Bibi, the wife of ex-prime minister Imran Khan, on Thursday sent a legal notice to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Chief Organizer Maryam Nawaz Sharif for defamation over corruption allegations.

The former first lady Bushra Bibi sent a legal notice through her lawyer, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Advocate Faisal Farid.

In the legal notice, an unconditional apology has been sought from Maryam Nawaz for allegedly defaming Bushra Bibi within 7 days.

The notice stated that Maryam Nawaz made baseless and false allegations against the former premier’s wife in Lahore on 1 May.

The notice warned that a criminal case would be lodged against the PML-N leader if she did not retract her accusations against the former first lady.

The speech text, wherein Maryam Nawaz allegedly hurled allegations, has also been made part of the notice.

It said Maryam Nawaz is running a “malicious campaign” to defame Bushra and her family.

The development comes 2 days after PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry announced that Bushra Bibi had decided to lodge a case against Maryam Nawaz over bribery allegations.

In a press briefing in Islamabad, the PTI’s senior vice president Chaudhry said Maryam Nawaz alleged that Bushra Bibi was taking bribes for getting official documents inked by the authorities during the previous PTI government.

Fawad Chaudhry said that Bushra Bibi never participated in any political activities and was only seen visiting shelter homes.

Maryam Nawaz’s allegations

Maryam Nawaz has repeatedly accused Bushra Bibi of receiving bribes — including diamond jewellery set in return for using her influence in official decision-making during Imran Khan-led government.

Maryam Nawaz had alleged that a close of Bushra Bibi Farhat Shezadi remained actively involved in running the affairs of the Usman Buzdar-led government in Punjab and would also receive bribes for official postings and transfer of the officials.
