ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi married during the latter’s Iddat, despite knowing everything, said the renowned cleric Mufti Saeed who solemnized the couple’s Nikah.

The cleric appeared before a court here to give his statement during the case proceedings related to the alleged un-Islamic Nikah of former premier Imran Khan with Bushra Riaz Wattoo, better known as Bushra Bibi. Imran Khan was married to Bushra — who is his 3rd wife — in February 2018.

Former PTI leader Awn Chaudhry and Imran Khan’s friend Zulfi Bukhari had said Mufti Saeed had solemnized the nikah in Lahore. The two also stood witness to the Nikah.

The cleric appeared before a local court in the capital Islamabad with his lawyer to record the statement.

Mufti Saeed said that Imran Khan contacted him on phone in January 2018. At that time, he had good relations with Imran Khan and was a core committee member.

He said Imran Khan asked him to solemnize his Nikah with Bushra Bibi.

Woman accompanying Bushra Bibi gave testimony

The mufti further said that a woman accompanying Bushra Bibi introduced herself as her sister. The cleric said that he asked the woman if Bushra’s Nikah can be solemnized as per Shariah. The woman replied that all conditions for the marriage under the Shariah were complete.

Mufti added that he solemnized the Nikah on 1 January 2018 over the woman’s assurance.

The cleric said that, then the former prime minister contacted him again in February 2018 and requested him to solemnize his Nikah again as the first time it was done against the Shariah.

He said that the first time when he solemnized Nikah, Bushra Bibi’s Iddat hadn’t been over. He quoted Imran Khan as saying that Bushra Bibi had been divorced in November 2017 and that there was a prediction that he will become the prime minister if he married her.

The cleric added that the first Nikah was illegal which had been solemnized on the basis of prediction.

Mufti Saeed had also claimed on 24 January during a talk show on a private news channel.

Even before, it had been reported in the media that Imran Khan’s third Nikah took place on 1 January 2018. However, the party had denied the reports at that time.
