LUCKNOW: At least 18 people have been killed and 19 others injured when a bus collided with a milk tanker on the Lucknow-Agra expressway in India’s Uttar Pradesh state.
“A sleeper bus, going from Shivgarh in Bihar to Delhi, rammed into the tanker from behind in the Behta Mujawar police station area of the Unnao district,” said Zulfiqar Ali from the district police chief’s office.
Expressing sorrow over the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described it as “heart-wrenching.”
According to NDTV, the bus was en route from Bihar, heading towards New Delhi.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences on the road accident and termed it ‘extremely painful’.
India frequently witnesses road accidents, with government data reporting 168,000 fatalities in 2022 alone.
Earlier in May, another tragic incident in Kashmir claimed 21 lives and left over 50 injured when a bus fell into a deep gorge.
