ISLAMABAD: At least 16 people were killed after a passenger bus slammed into a parked truck on a highway in the Sudanese city of Omdurman early on Tuesday.
Police said that the bus swerved off the road and hit a parked truck in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital, Khartoum. At least 19 people were wounded in the accident.
The bus was heading to Khartoum from Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur province, local police said adding that ambulances rushed to the scene to transfer the wounded to the Omdurman hospital, while the dead were taken to the morgue.
There had been no immediate word about what caused the bus to swerve and hit the parked truck.
Bus accidents in African countries
Traffic accidents are common in Sudan mainly because of badly-maintained roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws. Thousands of people die every year in impoverished African countries including Sudan in road accidents.
