ISLAMABAD/ LIMA: At least 13 people were killed in a collision between a bus and a motorcycle taxi in Peru on Sunday, according to the public prosecutor.
According to public prosecutor Edwin Ramos, the fatalities occurred when a fire broke out following the head-on collision in the region of Ancash, about 370 kilometers (230 miles) north of Lima. The bodies were burned beyond recognition, according to police in Casma province, and coroners will use fingerprints to identify the deceased.
Motorcycle taxi driver among those killed
The motorcycle taxi driver was among those killed, and the bus driver was detained by the police. Six other people were injured and taken to the regional hospital in Casma. The bus was carrying about 50 people from the northern region of Piura to Lima. Road accidents are common in Peru, where speeding, poor road conditions, a lack of road signs, and a lack of authority all play a role.
