ADDIS ABABA: At least 28 people were killed and 19 others sustained serious injuries when a bus swerved into a river in southern Ethiopia on Wednesday, local authorities said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Wolaita region, approximately 400 kilometers (around 250 miles) south of the capital, Addis Ababa.
Local authorities reported that the bus swerved off the road and plunged into a river, prompting immediate search and rescue operations. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, and officials have not yet disclosed the total number of passengers on board at the time of the incident.
According to a statement posted on social media, “So far, 28 people have died in the accident, and 19 others have been seriously injured.”
Eyewitness accounts and photos shared online depict the bus in a precarious position, having rolled down a steep slope and into the water. The images reveal significant damage, with the roof completely ripped off, suggesting the severity of the crash.
