DAKAR: Burkina Faso and Mali are set to send a joint delegation in a show of solidarity with the coup-hit Niger.

The Malian army said in a statement that Mali and Burkina Faso were sending a joint delegation to Niamey. The visit aims to demonstrate the solidarity of the two nations with the brotherly people of Niger, AFP reported on Monday.

According to Niger’s foreign ministry, the delegation is likely to arrive in Niger on Monday.

Niger’s Coup Leaders Defy Deadline

The coup leaders in Niamey ignored a Sunday deadline from the ECOWAS—the West African group— to reinstate democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum or face military action.

Mali and Burkina Faso, where the military also seized power in 2020 and 2022, respectively, warned in a joint statement that the military intervention would be considered as a declaration of war. – AFP
