LONDON:  A British nurse has been found guilty of killing seven newborn babies in the neonatal unit of a hospital in England, reported British media on Friday.

Reuters reported that Lucy Letby, 33, who worked at the Countess of Chester hospital was convicted in a case of killing five baby boys and two baby girls and attacking other newborns during her duty.

She was found guilty after 10-month trial at Manchester Crown Court. Families of Letby’s victims said in a statement they are heartbroken, devastated, and angry about the tragic killings.

Prosecutors informed the jury that Letby killed some of the babies by injecting them with insulin, while others were injected with air or force-fed milk.

Letby is expected to be sentenced on Monday and could be awarded a full life sentence.

Her criminal act came to light when senior doctors expressed concern about unexplained deaths and collapses at the neonatal unit over 18 months from January 2015.

Nigel Scawn, medical director at Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said they are devastated by what has happened.

The government said it had ordered an independent inquiry into the incident. Police are carrying out further investigations to identify if there were any more victims as Lucy Letby has also worked in a hospital in Liverpool.
