LONDON: Director of British Museum Hartwig Fischer has announced to step down from his post after incidents of thefts of artefacts reported from the central London’s institution.
According to western media reports on Friday, he took the decision after accepting failure over repeated acts of theft of precious items from the British Museum galley.
“The responsibility for that failure must ultimately rest with the director,” he said.
The museum’s board of trustees accepted his resignation, saying that he “acted honourably” and his services towards the museum cannot be questioned.
British Museum Staff Member dismissed Over Stolen Items
Earlier British Museum had dismissed a staff member following the theft of valuable items and gems from its collection.
The museum in a statement said the items included gold jewellery, semi-precious stones and glass from the 15th Century BC to the 19th Century AD were stolen from its galleries.
The museum took legal action against the staffer and the Metropolitan Police’s economic and crime command started investigating the matter.
Following the incident that security of the museum was increased and the experts started working to find out what is missing, damaged or stolen.
Former trustee Sir Nigel Boardman has media that the British Museum has been the victim of theft.
