Britain Minister Warns Meta on Children’s Safety

LONDON: Britain’s Interior Minister has warned Meta that rolling out end-to-end encryption on its different platforms must “not to come at a cost to our kids’ safety” Western media reported on Wednesday.

The UK Interior and Security Minister have called on Meta, which owns Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook to work with them and ensure police can access data of Meta.

Suella Braverman said that the use of strong encryption for users remains a key part of their digital world and they support it but it cannot come at a cost to their kids’ safety. She said that the platform has failed to give assurances that it would keep all platforms secure from shocking abusers. Suella Braverman demanded that Meta should develop healthy safeguards.

WhatsApp offers the service, which permits only the recipient and sender of a message to access its stuff. As per the media reports, Meta is also now planning to extend the same feature to Facebook and Instagram as well.

The National Crime Agency’s director James Babbage has warned the plans of the Meta could “massively decrease their collective ability” to protect kids. The tech giant said that “the awe-inspiring majority of Brits rely on applications that use encryption to keep them secure from fraudsters, hackers, and criminals.
