CHRISTCHURCH: In a stunning display of resilience, Alex Carey led Australia’s charge with an unbeaten 98, guiding them to a thrilling three-wicket victory over New Zealand in Christchurch.
Despite early setbacks, including the loss of key wickets and a delayed start due to rain, Carey combined forces with Mitchell Marsh (80) to forge a game-changing 140-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
Though Ben Sears threatened with a late burst, removing Marsh and Mitchell Starc in successive deliveries, Carey and skipper Pat Cummins (32) held their nerve to seal the win with Australia reaching 281-7.
Reflecting on the match, Cummins emphasized the squad’s ability to step up in crucial moments, while Tim Southee acknowledged the challenge posed by the world’s best team. Despite valiant efforts from New Zealand, including Sears’ impressive debut performance, Australia’s determination proved decisive, securing their sixth win in seven Tests over the Australasian summer and propelling them into second place in the World Test Championships standings, behind India.
