BRASALIA, Brazil: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 78, cancelled his trip to Russia for the BRICS summit after medical advice following a head injury that caused a minor brain haemorrhage.

Initially scheduled to depart on Sunday, Lula will now attend the summit via videoconference. Reuters reported that Lula’s doctor, Roberto Kalil, revealed that the president had suffered a fall, leading to significant head trauma, resulting in stitches and a small haemorrhage in the temporal-frontal region. Kalil emphasized the importance of monitoring the injury throughout the week, as the condition could worsen. Despite the injury, the president is reportedly doing well and can perform regular activities, excluding long-distance travel.

The Sirio Libanes Hospital’s medical report confirmed a laceration in the occipital region at the back of Lula’s head. As a precaution, Lula was advised to avoid long flights. Instead, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira will represent Brazil at the summit.

The BRICS summit, an important diplomatic event, includes key emerging markets such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, and new members like South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. Congresswoman Gleisi Hoffmann reassured the public that Lula is recovering well.
