Brazilian FM Denounces Israel’s Actions in Gaza

SAO PAULO: Foreign Minister of Brazil Mauro Vieira during a meeting with Palestinian leadership on Sunday strongly condemned Israeli actions in Gaza.

The visiting foreign minister held meetings in Ramallah with the Palestinian president, prime minister and foreign minister, while participating in an event at the Yasser Arafat Foundation.

Vieira attended in an award ceremony in which Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was awarded the title of honorary member of the foundation’s board of trustees.

The foreign minister received the award from Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh, who praised Lula’s support for Palestine.

Vieira in the speech strongly condemned Israel and the global community for insufficient humanitarian assistance since the conflict in Gaza started.

He termed as illegal and immoral the refusal of food, water and medicine to Palestinian civilians, attacks on aid convoys, and the destruction of medical facilities.

Credibility of global governance system under Gaza rubble

Vieira went on to say the credibility of the current global governance system is under the rubble of Gaza.

He reviewed initiatives of Brazilian in favor of a cessation of brutalities in Gaza since October, and his country’s historical support for the recognition of independent Palestinian state and its admission as a full member of the United Nations (UN).

After the ceremony, Vieira met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. They reviewed the Israeli-Palestinian war and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Abbas thanks for Lula’s commitment and friendship toward Palestine.

He also thanked the government of Brazil for its support for the admission of Palestine as a full UN member.

Foreign Minister Riad Malki, received Vieira in Ramallah who praised Lula for defending Palestine and its people.

Malki during the meeting voiced concern about the risks of Israeli military action in Rafah in southern Gaza, and reported an increase in violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank.
