SAO PAULO: A 17-year-old girl was killed and three other students injured when a shooter opened fire in a high school in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Monday, authorities said.

Officials said police apprehended the shooter, identified as a teenage boy who also attended the public high school in the Sapopemba area of Sao Paulo.

According to Sao Paulo state Governor Tarcisio de Freitas, two girls and boy were injured in the shooting while trying to flee the scene. While addressing a news conference he said he was appalled at the attack.

He added the injured were taken to the hospital and are now out of danger. Brazil has witnessed an increase in school attacks recently.

Earlier this month, a former student stabbed four students, killing one, as they left school in the city of Pocos de Caldas.

In April, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s administration announced a series of steps to enhance security at schools and tackle social media content seen as promoting school violence.

As a critic of far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro’s rollbacks of gun control laws, he condemned the latest shooting on X, formerly Twitter.

He added that we cannot let ourselves think it is normal for children to have access to guns and for tragedies like this to happen.

As per Brazilian media the shooter used his father’s gun.
