Boy in Australia Develops ‘Margarita Burns’ Days after Handling Limes

ISLAMABAD: In Australia’s New South Wales a warning was issued after a boy developed dangerous burns days after handling limes, a fruit that is a summertime must have.

In a social media on 6 February, a women wrote about details of a hospital visit with her son and warned others about the medical condition not known commonly.

Catherine, the boy’s mother, stated that few days after lad had been juicing limes with his cousins, he developed bad burns on his arms and hands.

The boy was admitted at the hospital for a day and later on had to be treated in the burns unit. During the examination, Catherine came to know that the condition was called margarita burn.

Phytophotodermatitis is the medical term used for a margarita burn, which are formed after skin touches psoralens or a light-sensitizing botanical agent, or psoralens.

The psoralens are found in limes, which make the skin to become more sensitive to UV light or simply a bad sunburn.

In November last year, the Tiny Hearts Education, which provides first-aid to children, posted a picture on Instagram showing a toddler who had suffered similar burns after lime exposure.
