LONDON: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Tuesday that he had conveyed “deep” concerns to Chinese leaders regarding reports of sensitive operations conducted by Beijing in Cuba. Blinken made the remarks during a press conference in London after his visit to Beijing.
Speaking to reporters, Blinken emphasized the United States’ apprehensions about potential intelligence or military activities by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Cuba. He stated, “Yes, I made it very clear that we would have deep concerns about China’s intelligence or military activities in Cuba.”
The US diplomat emphasized that the situation would be closely monitored, and the US government had been transparent in expressing its concerns. He further added, “We will protect our homeland, we will protect our interests.”
Progress in US-China Relations
During his two-day visit, Blinken met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other Chinese foreign-policy officials. Both sides highlighted limited progress achieved during the highest-level US trip to China in nearly five years. However, strains have emerged due to China’s expanding influence near US shores under President Xi’s leadership.
US officials have raised concerns about alleged Chinese intelligence operations established in Cuba, situated just off the southeastern coast of the United States. Additionally, on Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that China and Cuba are in negotiations to establish a joint military training facility on the island.
Despite these tensions, Blinken underscored the importance of engaging with China and emphasized the longstanding relationship between President Xi and President Joe Biden. He stated, “It would be irresponsible not to engage, irresponsible because it makes more likely the possibility of misunderstandings, miscalculations, and thus conflict.”
