WASHINGTON: The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday called for the Palestinian reforms after Palestinian Authority named new government.
Blinken expressed the views during a phone call with leader of the Palestinian Authority Mahmud Abbas, as Washington is trying to find a post-war solution in Gaza.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Blinken told Abbas that the US looks forward to work closely with the new PA cabinet to promote security, peace, and prosperity of the area and stressed the implementation of necessary reforms.
He added that Secretary Blinken emphasized that a strong PA is vital to delivering results for the people of Palestine in both the West Bank and Gaza.
Last week Abbas approved a new government led by Mohammed Mustafa, with representation for women and Palestinians from Gaza.
Since the war started in October, the US has been pressing for the Palestinian Authority to root out corruption and bring new reforms in the West Bank and take charge of Gaza.
But Miller said Blinken expressed the US commitment to the creation of an independent state of Palestine.
According to the health ministry in the besieged Gaza Strip at least 32,845 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed since October 7 amid the ongoing Israeli bombardment of Gaza.
The grim figure includes 63 deaths recorded in the past 24 hours alone, with a total of 75,392 persons wounded during the more than five months of bombing campaign.
