MOSCOW: A blast at an explosives factory in Samara region of Russia killed six people and wounded two others on Friday.

The deadly explosion occurred at the Promsintez plant in the city of Chapayevsk. Eight people were wounded, six of whom succumbed to death,” Russian media reported.

The explosion occurred as a result of the dismantling of equipment when the repair work was underway.

Promsintez is one of the leading manufacturers of industrial explosives in the country. It employs 1,300 workers and supplies the oil and mining gas sector.

The company that owns the factory was established in 1997, but the plant dates back to pre-revolutionary Russia, set up by the country’s last tsar, Nicholas Two, in 1911.

Blasts at factories in Russia

Accidents at factories are relatively common in Russia, with an often slack approach to safety rules.

In June, four people were killed in a blast at a gunpower factory in the Tambov, southeast of Moscow.

Many factories have been operating vigorously in the country since the start of the offensive in Ukraine. —AFP
