KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Sunday declared 14 May as a historic day for Pakistan and democracy. On this day, the late Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif inked the Charter of Democracy in 2006.

Bilawal Bhutto said that by following the Charter of Democracy, the prestige of Pakistan has increased and democracy is strengthened. He said the 18th Amendment is a deal between the federation and all federating units. Only the parliament has the power to legislate and make a constitution. Bilawal said that it was the duty of the rest of the state’s institutions to follow the laws made by parliament.

He said that due to the immense sacrifices of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and PPP workers, the 1973 Constitution was restored to its original form, which was the defeat of those who hate and despise democracy.

He said that due to the exemplary struggle for the country’s security and restoration of democracy, the Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto graveyard is inhabited by martyrs.  Bilawal said that it is encouraging that today, members of parliament (MPs) and political parties are united on the same page for the empowered Parliament.

He added that an undemocratic attitude has to be defeated by steadfast and strict adherence to the Charter of Democracy.  Bilawal said that Parliament is supreme and everyone has to submit to it. –APP
