WASHINGTON: United States President Joe Biden called for immediate release of Niger’s elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
The coup in Niger a few days ago has seen President Mohamed Bazoum getting ousted by the head of Niger’s Presidential Guard General Abdourahamane Tiani who declared himself as new president.
Former president Mohamed Bazoum is held captive by the military since July 26.
President Joe Biden’s statement in restoration of democracy in Niger came as France wanted safety guarantees for their embassy.
The US and UK have already reduced their staff at their embassies in the capital.
The French in the air evacuation mission has flown 1,079 people out of Niger.
