WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden reiterated the unwavering commitment of the United States to stand by Ukraine, reassuring American allies and the people of Ukraine that their support would not waver.
Addressing the nation from the White House, Biden expressed a resolute stance despite the absence of new wartime aid for Ukraine in an 11th-hour deal by Congress on Saturday to avert a government shutdown.
Biden underscored the “overwhelming sense of urgency” to secure Congress’s approval for a new assistance package for Ukraine, highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle against the Russian invasion. The President emphasized that the United States would not retreat from its commitment to aid Ukraine during this critical period.
US Funding for Ukraine
The recent compromise between Republicans and Democrats, which kept the government operational for the next 45 days, did not include additional war-time aid for Ukraine. Biden criticized the brinksmanship tactics employed by Republicans and urged House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to prevent another funding crisis when the current 45-day stopgap deal expires.
“I am sick and tired of the brinksmanship,” Biden asserted, speaking passionately from the Roosevelt Room at the White House. “The brinksmanship has to end. There shouldn’t be another crisis.”
