WASHINGTON: Friends with differences – Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Joe Biden – met here as the American president received his French counterpart at the Oval Office. While the two leaders are honoring US-France long-term ties they are also divided on Biden’s cornerstone climate law as a bad deal for Europe.

This is the first state dinner of Biden’s presidency. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia is also expected to take center stage at the meeting. Also, in focus would be seeking ways to work together in containing an increasingly assertive China.

Biden and Macron Discuss Climate law favors US technology

Macron has said, without being vague, that all leaders of Europe are concerned over the American law on the climate-related incentive that favors US technology.

The contentious legislation is called the Inflation Reduction Act.
