WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden engaged in phone conversations on Saturday with the leaders of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom (UK) to discuss the unfolding crisis in Russia. The discussions centered around expressing unwavering support for Ukraine amidst the escalating tensions in the region.
According to a statement issued by the White House, President Biden held separate phone calls with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to address “the situation in Russia.” The talks come as President Vladimir Putin faces a significant threat to his rule, with rebel mercenaries making advances toward the Russian capital after seizing a critical military base.
Biden, Western Leaders Reaffirm Support for Ukraine
During the conversations, the leaders reaffirmed their steadfast support for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of standing by the country in its current predicament. The White House statement emphasized the allies’ commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Furthermore, a White House spokesperson disclosed that President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris received briefings from their national security team on Saturday morning regarding the Russian crisis. The spokesperson added that the President and Vice President would continue to be briefed throughout the day to stay updated on the evolving situation.
