WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden revealed on Friday that a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November is under consideration, potentially taking place at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in San Francisco. The announcement follows recent reports suggesting the two leaders were in talks to hold discussions during the summit.

While no official confirmation has been made by Beijing regarding Xi Jinping’s attendance at the APEC forum, Biden expressed the possibility of the meeting during a press briefing at the White House. The potential summit comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and China, with both nations vying for influence, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

Biden had previously expressed disappointment over Xi Jinping’s absence at the G20 summit in New Delhi last month but had hinted at an upcoming meeting without specifying the details. Bilateral relations between the US and China have been strained due to various issues, including trade disputes, Taiwan’s future, and China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Preparations for Biden and Xi Jinping’s Meeting

Efforts to improve diplomatic ties have been evident, with the US sending senior officials to engage in discussions with their Chinese counterparts. White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Malta in September, marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to restore a more effective working relationship.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is also expected to visit Washington in the lead-up to the APEC summit, indicating both nations’ commitment to dialogue as they seek to address their differences and foster better understanding.
