GEORGIA, USA: President Biden won the Georgia presidential primary on Tuesday night, earning enough delegates to officially clinch the Democratic nomination for president in the 2024 general election.

Securing the nomination for the incumbent is a formality, but it could fend off Biden’s challengers and show broad unity among Democratic primary voters.

Biden did not face major opposition. In response to winning the nomination, Biden vehemently attacked his potential rival, former President Donald Trump.

Tuesday is also the first time Mr. Trump can win enough delegates to win the Republican nomination, but he may have to wait another week.

Voting also ends on Tuesday in Mississippi and Washington. The Republican Party is holding rallies in Hawaii and the Democratic Party is holding rallies overseas, as well as in the Northern Mariana Islands.

By Tuesday, Biden had won about 1,866 of the 1,968 delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination. There are 254 delegates at stake in the March 12 election, and on Tuesday morning, Biden won all six delegates from the Northern Mariana Islands.

President Trump has about 1,089 delegates, but needs 1,215 to win the nomination, up from 137 of the 161 delegates in the March 12 Republican primary.

Biden’s main opposition comes not from any candidate, but from more general intra-party doubts about his age and progress on his administration’s support for Israel during its months-long war with Hamas in Gaza.

Following Biden’s resignation as vice president, the president faced some scrutiny following the release of a report by special counsel Robert Hur that concluded Biden had mishandled and improperly disclosed classified information.

But Hur, who testified at the Capitol on Tuesday, said he believed there was insufficient evidence to charge Biden with a crime and that no charges had been filed.
