WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden has authorized potential new sanctions against those responsible for weeks of fighting in Sudan that have killed an estimated 700 people, mainly in Khartoum and Darfur.
“The violence in Sudan is a tragedy — and it is a betrayal of the people of Sudan’s clear demand for civilian and democratic government and a transition to democracy,” Joe Biden said in a statement.

“It must end.” Biden also signed an executive order that broadens authority to impose sanctions on “individuals responsible for threatening the security, peace, and stability of Sudan; undermining democratic transition of Sudan; using violence against civilians; or committing serious human rights abuses.”
However, the executive order does not name potential targets for the sanctions. The violence has sparked a large-scale evacuation of foreign nationals conducted by the militaries of several countries.
