SAN FRANCISCO: US President Joe Biden has arrived in San Francisco ahead of his attendance at APEC and expected Wednesday meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, local media reported on Tuesday.

As per media reports, President Joe Biden will stay in San Francisco until Friday.  US President Joe Biden has said that his aim during talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping this week is to restart normal communications between the two sides, including military-to-military contacts.

Speaking to journalists following remarks on climate change at the White House, President Biden said he is making efforts to alter the US ties with China for the better, following a period of strained relations.

Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping departed for San Francisco on Tuesday to meet with his United States counterpart, President Joe Biden, as reported by state media.

“President Xi Jinping departed Beijing on the evening of November 14 aboard via a special plane, invited by United States President Biden for the China-US presidents’ meeting in San Francisco,” state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The China-US leaders’ summit is expected to involve extensive discussions on strategic, general, and directional matters concerning bilateral relations, along with major issues related to global peace and development, said Chinese’s foreign ministry in a statement.

According to Reuters, President Biden and President Xi are to meet on Wednesday in the San Francisco during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation session. It will be only the second face to face meeting between the two Presidents since President Biden took office in January 2021.

Responding to a question, he said: “To get back on a normal track, corresponding and being able to pick up the telephone and dialogue to one another in a crisis, and also being able to make sure that our militaries officials still have contact with one another.”

President Biden stated it would benefit everyone if the average person in China had a decent-paying job.

Beijing severed military-to-military interactions with Washington in a fit of pique following then-House of Representative Speaker Nancy Pelosi paid a visit to Taiwan in August 2022.  Restoring the interactions is a top US aim to avoid miscalculations between the two militaries.
