WASHINGTON, USA: US President Joe Biden met with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to address key conflicts in the Middle East, particularly in Sudan and Gaza, despite concerns over the UAE’s alleged involvement in Sudan’s civil war.

Biden, along with Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, highlighted the risk of “imminent atrocities” in Sudan’s Darfur region, where brutal fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues.

While Sudan has accused the UAE of backing the RSF, which is responsible for crimes against humanity in Darfur, the joint statement avoided these accusations, instead calling for a ceasefire and urging all parties to follow international humanitarian law. The leaders expressed the importance of resuming political dialogue to restore peace in Sudan.

The conflict in Gaza was also a major topic, especially as the UAE is expected to play a significant role in Gaza’s post-war reconstruction. Biden also discussed the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, emphasizing efforts to de-escalate tensions.

In addition to conflict discussions, Biden praised the UAE’s forward-looking approach, noting its upcoming designation as a “major defense partner” of the United States. Meanwhile, the UAE framed the visit as an opportunity to emphasize economic and technological collaboration, particularly in artificial intelligence, as part of its pivot from an oil-dependent economy.

While the UAE maintains close ties with both the U.S. and Russia, it has opted for neutrality on major geopolitical issues, such as the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. This diplomatic balancing act highlights the complexity of its international relations.
