ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: The Biden administration has conveyed to the US Congress that was all set for the potential $20 billion sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey.

In an informal notice to Congress, US State Department has informed committees overseeing weapons sales in the Senate and House of Representatives of its intent to proceed with the proposed deal, three sources told TRT World.

Biden administration’s stance

The Biden administration has said that it supports the sale and had been in touch with US Congress to win its approval.

According to the Anadolu news agency, the notification on the sale of new F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits had been conveyed to the chairpersons and high-ranking members of relevant committees in the House of Representatives and Senate.

The State Department is expected to announce its notification next week officially. The congressional notification of the sales will start a 15-day window for lawmakers to raise objections.

Ankara has requested dozens of F-16s and modernization kits in October 2021.

The $6 billion deal could include the sale of 40 jets and modernization kits for 79 warplanes that the Turkish Air Force already has in its inventory.
