NOTTINGHAM: England captain Ben Stokes signed off from international cricket in emotional fashion on day four of the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, as the hosts were left chasing 383 for victory.
New Zealand declared on 288-9 after Daryl Mitchell struck an unbeaten century, setting England a difficult final-innings target in the series decider.
Stokes, who announced that this would be his final international appearance, received a guard of honour from New Zealand players before opening the innings for England.
Stokes falls after quick start
The England captain played aggressively, scoring 30 from just 20 balls before being dismissed. New Zealand players congratulated him as he walked off to a standing ovation from the crowd.
England reached stumps on 103-4, still needing 280 runs to win. Joe Root remained unbeaten, while Emilio Gay was also at the crease.
Ben Duckett made 36, while Harry Brook scored a rapid 21 from nine balls before falling at fine leg. Jacob Bethell was trapped lbw in the same over as Stokes.
Mitchell leads New Zealand
Earlier, Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra frustrated England with a 129-run stand. Ravindra fell for 94 before Mitchell completed his sixth Test century.
Jofra Archer, Shoaib Bashir and Stokes took key wickets, but New Zealand built a commanding lead before declaring.
