NEW YORK: In a significant address at the United Nations General Assembly, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng reiterated Beijing’s unwavering commitment to reunify all Chinese territory, including Taiwan.
Han’s remarks underscored China’s steadfast stance on sovereignty and its vision for global cooperation.
Han Zheng affirmed China’s dedication to safeguarding its sovereignty and reiterated the “One China” principle, emphasizing that the Chinese government is the sole legal representative of China. He declared, “Taiwan has been China since ancient times, and no force should ever underestimate the strong will of the Chinese people to safeguard their sovereignty.”
Han called upon the international community to prioritize equity, justice, peace, and security. He emphasized the importance of mutual benefit and development for all nations, urging a balanced pursuit of multilateralism. He urged major countries to lead by example and uphold their commitments to multilateralism.
Stressing the need for nonproliferation, Han highlighted China’s commitment as the only permanent member of the UN Security Council that has pledged not to use nuclear weapons first. He also announced China’s forthcoming ratification of the UN Firearms Protocol.
Han reiterated China’s commitment to global development and revealed that China will host the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in the coming month. This initiative is a cornerstone of China’s foreign policy, aimed at fostering economic cooperation and infrastructure development among participating nations.
China’s vice president outlined Beijing’s dedication to ecological preservation. This includes halting the construction of coal-fired power projects abroad and supporting developing countries in transitioning to green and low-carbon energy sources.
Han Zheng called for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and expressed support for the “restoration of lawful national rights” of the Palestinian people.
