BEIJING: Chinese Special Representatives for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui will visit Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for talks on the peaceful solution of the Ukraine conflict, China’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs said on Friday.

“Beijing is willing to work with world to continue to play a positive role in promoting a political settlement to the conflict in Ukraine,” Chinese Ministry for Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wang Wenbin, said in a statement.

Western and Ukrainian diplomats expressed hope that the meeting in Jeddah this weekend of senior officials and national security advisers from 40 nations will agree on main principles for a future peace solution to end war in Ukraine. Reuters reported that Russia will not attend the talks in Jeddah.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Zelenskiy hoped that the efforts will lead to a “peace summit” of leaders across the world this autumn to approve the principles, based on his own 10-point formula for a peace resolution.

The major diplomatic prize would be endorsement from Beijing, which has maintained close diplomatic and economic relations with Moscow and so far rejected global calls to denounce the invasion. Beijing was invited to a previous round dialogue in Copenhagen in late June but did not take part in it.
