BEIJING: China has warned the United States (US) against “interfering in Cuba’s internal affairs”, in reply to reports that China was making a plan to establish a spy base in the country, local media reported on Friday.
The media reports, based on remarks by nameless American officials to CNN and The Wall Street Journal were rejected by Cuba’s deputy minister for foreign affairs as “untruthful and baseless”, while the White House also called them inaccurate.
Beijing Slams Washington over Reported ‘Spy Base’ in Cuba
When asked regarding the alleged spying base at a regular press briefing in Beijing, China’s foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin replied he was “uninformed of the situation” before criticizing Washington’s policy on Cuba.
Wang said, “As we all know, spreading slander and rumors is a common tactic of America, and shamelessly interfering in the domestic affairs of other nations is its patent,”.
“Washington should reflect on itself and halt interfering in Cuba’s domestic affairs under the banner of democracy, and immediately abandon the commercial, economic, and financial embargo against the country.”
Earlier this year, Beijing sent what Washington called a high-altitude balloon across the US. It floated from west to east in the US before it was shot down by a US jet, APF reported.
