Beijing Hospital Fire Kills 21, Dozens Evacuated

BEIJING: A fire at a hospital in Beijing has killed 21 people and prompted the evacuation of dozens more patients. The fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon at the Beijing Changfeng Hospital in the city’s Fengtai District.

The emergency services were alerted to the blaze just before 1 pm local time, and it was brought under control around half an hour later.

Rescue efforts continued for another two hours, during which time a total of 71 patients were evacuated and taken to another location.

The reason of the fire is currently under investigation.

Cause of Beijing hospital fire

Videos posted on social media showed people sitting on external air conditioning units while others clung to ropes as they jumped from the building.

It is unclear whether all the hospital’s occupants were found and evacuated from the fire. The incident occurred in the east building of the hospital’s inpatient department.

The fatalities were confirmed after the victims were taken to another hospital for emergency treatment. No details were available regarding the number of wounds suffered in the fire or their condition.

Beijing Changfeng Hospital is situated in the city’s western urban area, around 25 minutes from central Tiananmen Square.
