ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali, well known for being outspoken in his views, has once again sparked debate — this time by prematurely declaring the return of Misbah-ul-Haq as Pakistan’s red-ball head coach.
Basit took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a photo of Misbah in Pakistan’s Test kit, captioned: “Red-ball’s head coach, Misbah-ul-Haq. Congratulations.”

This post came despite no official confirmation from either Misbah himself or the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The cryptic yet assertive announcement followed just hours after the PCB formally named Mike Hesson as Pakistan’s new white-ball head coach.
Assuming official duties
The former New Zealand coach is set to officially assume duties from 26 May, following the conclusion of PSL 10, where he is currently coaching Islamabad United.
For context, Misbah-ul-Haq previously served as Pakistan’s head coach from 2019 to 2021. During his tenure, the team played 16 Test matches, winning seven and losing six.
While his stint was not considered a failure, it did not leave a lasting tactical legacy, particularly in the longer format. Misbah’s cautious style of play often drew criticism, with pundits frequently questioning his decision-making and situational awareness during high-pressure moments.
