DHAKA: Police in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka fired tear gas to disperse activists of the main opposition political party who threw stones at police personnel during a protest demanding the resignation of the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the transfer of power to a non-partisan interim government to supervise general elections in upcoming year.

As per AP, one police official was killed and dozens of others were wounded, alongside scores of opposition workers.  Dhaka police spokesperson Faruk Hossain told AP that violence late Saturday continued at about 10 areas in Dhaka, where police confronted opposition supporters who assaulted them, destroyed vehicles and torched cars.

An opposition spokesperson, Zahiruddin Swapan, said that over 1 million activists joined their protest, but Hossain put the number at almost 200,000. The recent violence broke out at the Kakrail area in the country’s capital when workers of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party led by Ex-PM Khaleda Zia allegedly assaulted a bus carrying the ruling Awami League’s men to a separate gathering a few blocks away, local media reported.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary general of Khaleda Zia’s party, announced a protest across the Bangladesh on Sunday, blaming security forces of ruining a “peaceful” gathering. Some section of media reported that a police hospital was attacked in Dhaka.
