DHAKA: Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is poised to begin her fifth term following a resounding victory in an election overshadowed by opposition boycott.

The Awami League, led by Hasina, secured nearly 75% of elected parliamentary seats, with the remaining portion distributed among allied parties and friendly independent candidates.

Sunday’s election drew criticism from the United States and the United Nations due to a crackdown in late 2023 that resulted in the arrest of thousands of opposition party members.

Despite these challenges, the oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for 7:00 pm local time, with Hasina expected to retain crucial portfolios such as defence and energy.

The election, marked by a meagre 41.8% turnout, faced accusations of being a “sham” designed to solidify Hasina’s power.

However, regional powers China and India have extended congratulations and expressed a commitment to continued cooperation with Bangladesh.
