Bangladesh Signs Long-Term LNG Deal with Qatar to Meet Raising Energy Demands

DHAKA: Bangladesh and Qatar’s Middle Eastern energy hub signed a 15-year deal on liquefied natural gas (LNG) on Thursday in Doha.

According to a media statement issued by the former’s Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Ministry, the Government to Government (G2G) agreement was signed in the presence of Qatar’s State Minister for Energy Saad Sherida al-Kaabi and Bangladesh’s State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid.

Bangladesh will import an additional 1.5 million tons per annum (MTPA) of LNG, which is crucial for meeting rising energy demand to keep the country’s economy stable. The deal was signed between Bangladesh’s Petrobangla and Qatar’s Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company Ltd. (Qatargas).

Petrobangla Chairman Zanendra Nath Sarker and Executive Vice President (Marketing) of Qatar Energy Trading LLC, Abdulla Ahmad Ai-Hussaini, signed the contract on behalf of their respective sides.

Bangladesh Hopes Deal to Fulfill Energy Requirements

On the occasion, the state minister of Bangladesh, Nasrul Hamid, said that as the fastest growing economic country, demand for gas and electricity in Bangladesh was rising with time, and this long-term deal would help cement bilateral energy collaboration between the two sides.

Besides, it would be helpful to meet the country’s energy requirements in the industrial field and keep the economy more robust, Hamid said
